Immediate Media

I started working with Origin Publishing in 2006, 4 years before they became Immediate Media. Initially, I freelanced on the Hair portfolio before being offered the freelance art editor role on Blonde Hair magazine. Since then I have worked on a great many of their titles including Perfect Wedding, Cardmaking and Papercraft, History Revealed, BBC Wildlife, Who Do You Think You Are, Craftseller, Cross Stitch Crazy, Knit Today and Bookazine titles. My roles have varied from covering for holidays to taking on art editor’s roles.

What an extraordinary mammal! Trafficking of the pangolin has been spotlighted due to Covid-19. Let’s hope laws are enforced to protect this mysteriously beautiful creature. It took a while to find the perfect images to lead this feature.

Great attention to detail was required on this cover as black and white photography had to be coloured up precisely.

This magazine includes infographics and detailed maps to illustrate a period of history to the reader. I conveyed the brief for these graphic features to an illustrator. The finished result was required to be factual and easy for the reader to understand while being pleasing to look at.

Meetings about how the shots were to be styled, prop shopping and mood boards were very considered and detailed. Time with our photographer had to be maximised, so everything had to be very organised.

iDJ

As acting art editor I was responsible for 7 issues of iDJ. I liked to listen to the music while I was working on the corresponding feature layout in the magazine. It was great fun getting the feedback of the team as I listened to the music for the first time. A real team effort. I created most of the illustration including covers, some being commissioned out to illustrators and photographers. I got on really well with the editor and loved the creative collaboration we had on each issue. This job also included collating and creating adverts. Making the complete publication print-ready.
